A ball, a band, a magic circle…

Pilates! Mat Pilates!

If you’re looking for your forever after exercise routine...this is for you! ‘Pilates’ is what we call it.

Pilates was first founded in the early 1900’s by a man named Joseph Pilates. It was originally termed ‘Contrology’. It is said that Joseph Pilates was a sickly child and found health himself through exercising his body in a mindful manor. As a German man living in England at the time World War I broke out, Joseph was interned as an “enemy alien”. It was observed that he encouraged bed ridden patients to exercise against resistance using body-weight and even springs rigged to bedposts combined with his idea’s around controlled and mindful movements. He shared these techniques and training internees along the way.

These idea’s remain consistent with today’s mat Pilates practice. Commonly used pieces of equipment in our classes are: resistant bands, stability balls and pilates circles/magic circles. I personally love referring back to these origins of Pilates as I think it is important that as practitioners we questions why it is we do what we do, why should we do Pilates and the specific exercises.
